Clarinetist, saxophonist, improviser, composer based in Brno. Graduate of the Conservatory in Teplice, master’s degree and doctoral programme at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno. During studies he spent two years at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.
In addition to his education in classical music, he mostly focuses on contemporary, experimental and improvisational music. He works within a wide range of musical practices and tendencies ranging from jazz, free jazz, through contemporary music techniques, to sound experimental and free improvisation. With his thorough classical basis, but also a deep interest in modern, extended and extreme instrumental techniques, together with improvisational and compositional creativity shows Pavel as a versatile player and a specific performer, improviser and creator.
He has been exploring and discovering the possibilities of a solo clarinet / saxophone in the field of free improvisation since his master’s studies and appears in various ensembles and company of like-minded musicians. He leads several original ensembles: Divergent Connections Orchestra, jazz avant-garde quartet Next Phase, Pavel Zlámal & PQ jazz quartet, ZKKP free-fusion project, conceptual ensemble Heterophone, vocal avant-garde Brünnwerk. With each project recorded album. He is a member of the big band B-Side Band Brno and the 6 Fireballs among others. As a<br>player and soloist he has collaborated with ensembles such as Prague Improvisation Orchestra, BERG Orchestra, Brno Philharmonic, Brno National Theater, Brno contemporary Orchestra, Ostravská Banda and others. He premiered several dedicated contemporary pieces. In addition to the repertoire of his own bands, big band arrangements and works for solo clarinet and saxophone, he also collaborated as an author of music with the Brno Contemporary Orchestra, ensemble Lichtzwang and the Theater Goose on the String.
